Taking into consideration the route of Greece through the last decades, we can observe the continuous harmonization of European legislation at national level. In order to achieve this target, Greece has to move on from sanitary landfills to sanitary waste landfills as sooner and effectively as possible. Not only the European community leads to this way, but the national will for protection of human health and protection of the environment. After the examination of all prospects, this thesis concludes that there is the technology, the know-how and the community effort to build environmental awareness that will contribute to integrated solid waste management. Nevertheless we must not neglect that this target could not be achieved if there is no proper management, errors of the past occur again and full implementation of the existing legislation.
