Abstract
Sustainability is a complex concept and one which is very much open to interpretation. While we are reminded almost daily about the environmental damage caused by human activities, including climate change, land degradation and declining water availability and quality, uncertainties remain about the best way to respond at a personal, corporate and government level. Questions about sustainability and corporate social responsibility are being seriously considered and actioned by many companies around the world. Companies are grappling with identification of the major environmental impacts of their activities and how to address these through changes in manufacturing, design, logistics, marketing and business structures and relationships. The packaging industry in particular has been under intense pressure for decades to reduce packaging waste and over-packaging and, improve recyclability. However, there is concern that these goals are being pursued without considering the complex role of packaging and the systems that supply chains are a part of. Consequently it is often unclear whether isolated decisions provide a net overall improvement in environmental performance.
