The present dissertation is in the form of an educational guide for the effective management of the Protected Areas of our country. As these areas consist the very national capital of Greece, their effective management and development is of great importance for the social and economic well being of their wider area and the achievement of Sustainable Development. The dissertation includes an extending presentation not only of the theories but also of the applied tools of the contemporary science of management. This body of knowledge can be used in the framework of a holistic approach by the Management Agencies which have been recently institutionalized and operate in our country. The results and the proposals of the research are supported by three independent though complementary empirical researches which examine the present and the future of the Protected Areas management with special adaptation into the Greek reality. Furthermore, in the framework of the present dissertation, a model of self-evaluation of the effectiveness of Protected Areas management is also presented. The model can be used by the Management Agencies and any person or institution interested in it, as a brief diagnostic tool, as well as, a mean for the constant improvement of the performance of the sustainable management and development of Protected Areas.
