Abstract
The essay highlights the complicate and chaotic relation and stand of any merchant ship against the various types of marine pollution, international conventions and whatever has to do with the marine environment. The introduction chapters present the framework in which vessels and shipping industry are functioning. This part of the essay makes the reader familiar on how the legislations are created, which institutions enforce the legislation etc. Briefings on UN Organisation, IMO and how IMO adopts the International Marine Conventions are presented. Then, some of the main International Marine Conventions and Codes about Marine Pollution such as MARPOL, CLC, OPA 90, are examined. As it is concluded at the epilogue, International Conventions are the main factor that regulates and determines the overall stand of a ship against the environment. On the last and main part of the essay, the detailed stand of a ship against various environmental topics is analysed. Onboard operations, procedures, and practices such as crew training, garbage, ballasting – deballasting, recycling etc are presented. Finally, the essay ends up with the optimistic conclusion that shipping industry and ships have realised the stressing concern on marine pollution, that they are functioning under an adequate environmental legislation and that in general, the rules are followed.
