Abstract
This thesis examines the potential of team-based organizational models in the shipping industry, which traditionally relies on strict hierarchies for safety and compliance. It argues that while hierarchical structures remain essential onboard ships, increasing complexity, globalization, and digitalization call for more collaborative approaches in onshore operations. Team-based practices, such as shared decision-making, open communication, and collective accountability, can enhance adaptability, innovation, and employee engagement, though challenges like legal constraints, cultural resistance, and cybersecurity risks persist. Multicultural crews and digital tools offer opportunities for diversity and real-time coordination but require structured protocols and training. The study concludes that hybrid models combining hierarchical clarity with teamwork principles are the most viable solution, strengthening resilience, operational efficiency, and safety in a rapidly evolving maritime environment.
