Global environmental challenges and the accelerating depletion of natural resources have highlighted the need for a fundamental shift in industrial development models. So far, conventional industrial parks, which are based on linear resource flows, have fallen short in meeting the pressing sustainability goals of today. In response, Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs) have emerged as an innovative approach designed to achieve environmental, economic, and social goals through industrial symbiosis. By encouraging resource efficiency, circular economy practices, and collaborative management among nearby enterprises, EIPs represent a shift toward sustainable industrial ecosystems.
This thesis explores the feasibility of converting traditional Greek business parks into Eco-Industrial Parks using an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. Based on the principles of Industrial Ecology, Systems Theory, and Sustainable Business Model Innovation, it establishes a comprehensive theoretical framework that views industrial networks as dynamic, strategic, and interconnected systems capable of optimizing resource and energy flows. Building on this foundation, the research advances to a practical phase through a pre-feasibility study evaluating the technical, financial, and environmental viability of establishing an EIP in Greece, all while considering the unique challenges posed by the Greek landscape.
The findings indicate that such an initiative is not only feasible but also likely to produce significant results, as long as it is backed by clear governance structures, solid stakeholder collaboration, and focused policy measures. By connecting theoretical insights with practical planning, this study demonstrates the potential of Eco-Industrial Parks to accelerate Greece’s transition toward a more circular, resilient, and sustainable industrial future.
