This thesis examines the offshore oil extraction, processing, and storage sector, with a focus on companies operating Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units. It begins by outlining major developments in the global energy market, long-term oil demand trends, and the technological, geopolitical, and environmental factors influencing offshore operations. It then describes the main categories of offshore infrastructure and the operational lifecycle from exploration to hydrocarbon production, storage, and transportation.
The empirical analysis evaluates the financial performance of four major FPSO companies (MODEC, SBM Offshore, Teekay Offshore, and BW Offshore) during the period 2019–2023. Key financial indicators are used to assess profitability, capital structure, investment strategy, and stock-market behavior, while additional attention is given to the impact of international oil-price fluctuations and global decarbonization initiatives on sector dynamics.
The findings indicate that FPSO companies remain essential to global energy supply, demonstrating resilience to market volatility. Nonetheless, the sector faces increasing challenges related to environmental regulation, high capital intensity, and technological complexity. The thesis concludes with insights and recommendations for further research within the context of the accelerating energy transition.
