This thesis explores the role of ESG criteria (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in the banking sector, with a focus on the Regional Unit of Thiva in Boeotia. The aim of the study is to understand the perceptions of employees in Greek banking institutions regarding the implementation and effectiveness of ESG practices. The study begins with a theoretical overview of the three ESG pillars, their importance, and their application within the banking sector. In particular, it examines the connection between ESG and sustainable banking, available strategies, ESG-
related products and indicators, with an analysis and comparison of practices across the four systemic Greek banks (National Bank of Greece, Eurobank, Alpha Bank, and Piraeus Bank). The research approach is based on the collection of primary data from bank employees in the Thiva area and focuses on seven core research questions. The questionnaire was conducted between March and July 2025, with 62 participants, and includes 22 questions. Among other aspects, the study investigates the relationship between factors such as age, education level, and professional experience with perceptions of ESG effectiveness, challenges, and future prospects. It also examines the integration of ESG actions into local banking practices and the factors that influence their efficiency, such as training, transparency, and awareness of the ESG concept. The findings are expected to highlight the importance of institutional training, the local integration of sustainable policies, and the challenges banks face in transitioning toward a more responsible and sustainable financial system. In conclusion, the integration of ESG in the banking sector is progressing slowly, influenced less by personal characteristics (such as age, education, or experience) and
more by structural factors such as internal communication, training, and organizational culture. There is a generally positive attitude and recognition of the importance of ESG, but successful implementation requires support, transparency, and education.
