This economic and environmental assessment for the establishment of a wind farm on
the island of Lesbos examines the investment in a wind farm that will include five
Vestas V136–3.45 MW wind turbines on land owned by the investors. The aim of the
project is to exploit the strong wind potential of the area and enhance the island's
energy independence. However, the objective of the study is to assess the viability of
the investment.
It begins by analyzing the energy market in which the company that is the subject of
this study, Aegean Wind Energy S.A., will operate, examining electricity demand, pricing
policies, the regulatory framework, and trends in the transition to renewable energy
sources. At the same time, the external and internal environment is assessed using
PEST, Porter, and SWOT tools in order to identify the opportunities and challenges
affecting the development of a wind farm in the specific area.
On a technical level, the project includes a comprehensive installation, interconnection,
and operation system, with SCADA control systems and modern electrical infrastructure
that ensures the safe and efficient operation of the wind turbines for a period of more
than twenty years. The company's organizational structure is supported by specialized
technical and administrative staff, ensuring the effective management and maintenance
of the infrastructure. The environmental assessment shows that the project fully
complies with legal requirements, without causing significant or irreversible damage to
the natural environment. Land occupation is limited and compatible with local uses,
while mitigation measures ensure the protection of biodiversity.
In economic terms, the investment shows strong profitability, with positive ROI, NPV,
and IRR indicators and a payback period not exceeding the first six years of operation—
a particularly positive factor for a project with a life cycle of 20–25 years. The sensitivity
analysis and break-even point show that the project is stable and resilient to market
fluctuations, with stable cash flows and low operating costs.
Overall, the wind farm is a mature, well-documented, and cost-effective investment
proposal, with significant benefits for both investors and the local community. Its
implementation is expected to strengthen the energy autonomy of Lesvos, create added
value, and support the transition to a more sustainable energy future.
