This diploma thesis investigates Transformational Leadership (TL) in professional football, presenting the coach as the central figure for a club's organizational and economic development. The study aims for a detailed analysis of the influence exerted by three pivotal figures in modern football history—Jürgen Klopp, Mikel Arteta, and José Luis Mendilibar—on the teams they managed, demonstrating that success is a multidimensional phenomenon.
The research employs the Multiple Case Study method, focusing on three distinct leadership cases that cover all facets of Transformational Leadership. The analysis was based on the collection and processing of quantitative data. This data includes: The athletic performance (wins, losses) of the teams before and after the change in technical leadership, the change in the players' market value (Asset Creation), and the documentation of characteristic moments where the coaches' TL rhetoric led to historical comebacks.
The study findings demonstrate a clear and direct correlation between the leadership stance and the outcome, categorized as: 1. Long-term Value (Klopp & Arteta), proving that the consistent application of a clear philosophy is the foundation for success. 2. Immediate Transformation (Mendilibar), where the analysis showed that simple and practical leadership can serve as a catalyst for success during critical situations. 3. The Role of Mentality, a common element among all three coaches, highlighting their ability to transform teams with low morale into "mentality giants," proving that psychological empowerment is often more critical than tactics.
In conclusion, the thesis suggests that the transformational leader in football connects athletic success with organizational development. Their leadership stance is not confined to the pitch but extends to shaping the club. This research confirms the initial hypothesis that selecting the right coach-leader is the most significant investment a club can make.
