This thesis examines the emerging hydrogen economy as a critical factor for global decarbonization, analyzing its technological foundations, economic viability, its implementation strategies, and its strategic implications for business and policy. The environmental need is clear: with atmospheric CO₂ rising above 420 ppm and fossil fuels contributing 70-75% of carbon emissions, hydrogen offers zero-emission combustion with flexibility in the transport, industry, and energy storage sectors. Economic analysis reveals significant challenges and opportunities. Case studies from the Orkney Islands, Japan, and Germany illustrate various implementation approaches, from local community to national industrial transformation.
