This thesis serves as a partial investigation into the importance of soft skills in promoting a safer and more efficient working environment within tanker management companies, both in onboard operational functions and in shore-based operations. The study explores the significance of the human element in shipping and examines the integration of behavioral management practices—specifically, the adoption of skill-oriented procedures within the safety and quality management systems of ship management companies—while proposing pathways toward regulatory compliance as well as best practices for the future.
We begin by contextualizing the discussion on soft skills with reference to the four pillars of maritime legislation, namely the SOLAS and MARPOL conventions. We investigate where and how references are made to practices that highlight the need for human interaction, the application of interpersonal competencies, and the development of training structures addressing issues that extend beyond strict technical proficiency and relate to human relations and interpersonal dynamics.
We further establish the foundation of our work and define the significance of soft skills in the maritime sector after recognizing the fundamental importance of the human factor—both seafarers and shore-based personnel—for the safe execution of operational activities at sea and on land. The term “safety” is interpreted according to its English usage, which is dual in nature, encompassing aspects of both safety and quality.
Finally, the thesis presents an approach to a behavioral competency assessment and verification system for tanker managers. This approach is largely based on the material and topics discussed in the preceding chapters and is influenced by the Behavioral Competency Assessment and Verification System as outlined in the SIRE 2.0 and DryBMS frameworks.
