The rapid increase in the production of spatiotemporal data from monitoring systems, sensors and satellites has created new challenges in the management, analysis and exploitation of this information in areas such as maritime, security, surveillance and environmental monitoring. The selection of the appropriate database management system is crucial for the effective processing of such data. This thesis gathers and analyzes the most important methodologies, tools and systems that have been developed for the effective storage, processing and analysis of large sets of spatiotemporal data, with an emphasis on real maritime scenarios and modern technological approaches. Through the comparative presentation of relational and non-relational databases, the capabilities of each system are explored in terms of speed, flexibility and efficiency in spatiotemporal queries. The analysis aims to highlight the appropriate tool to support demanding maritime monitoring and mobility applications.
