The green challenge in global shipping

View/ Open
Abstract
The subject of the paper concerns the major challenge facing the global shipping industry, which is the de-carbonization according to the targets set by the IMO (International Maritime Organization), through alternative fuels. The IMO's targets from phase-down to zero emissions are clear and, in this paper, we will study what these objectives are, whether they can be achieved within the time-limits set, which fuels can be used, what the problems are and whether the benefit is greater than the cost. We will analyze the most common alternative fuels of interest to the shipping industry, how they are produced and how popular or attractive they are to become the fuel that will meet the de-carbonization target. In addition, we will make a price comparison between the most common alternative fuels and those currently in use, as this is certainly an issue of concern to the business world of global shipping. In addition, we will refer to the potential impact that the oil industry can have through green shipping. Finally, we will list the dilemmas faced by all those involved in this challenge and what investments or steps have been taken so far.
