This master’s thesis aimed to design and implement a collaborative board game enhanced with Augmented Reality (AR) for the promotion of health education in primary schools. The game “The Journey of Health” uses the AR Tutor platform and combines physical and digital elements with an emphasis on collaborative learning, gamification and inclusion. Students participate in missions, quizzes and activities focused on five core areas: hygiene, nutrition, safety, mental health and first aids. Through role-based mechanics and collaborative interactions, the game fosters knowledge acquisition, life skills and positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.
The internal playtesting was conducted in a non-school environment with primary and secondary students. Findings revealed high levels of interest, engagement and collaboration, while students evaluated positively the experience of AR and role-playing activities. Nevertheless, certain technical limitations were identified (e.g. video playback delays, adaption to small screens), highlighting the need for further technical improvements.
This work contributes to the literature on AR in education by presenting an original Greek example of its application in health education. Furthermore, it demonstrates the potential of collaborative games to enhance social interaction, empathy and responsibility. Future directions for enrichment include application in authentic school settings, the integration of additional thematic areas (such as environmental health and responsible use of digital devices) and the connection with experiential activities in collaboration with health professionals.
Overall, “The Journey of Health” represents an innovative pedagogical proposal that combines AR, collaborative learning and gamification, offering an engaging tool for the promotion of health in primary education.
