This master’s thesis focuses on the design, development and implementation of a digital course entitled “Digital Threat Recognition and Adoption of Daily Digital Protection Practices”, aimed at adult learners. The study was conducted within the framework of the M.Sc. in E-Learning at the University of Piraeus and is based on the European Digital Competence Framework DigComp 2.2, with particular emphasis on device protection and data/privacy protection.
The development of the course addresses the growing need for education in cybersecurity, as citizens are increasingly exposed to phishing attacks, malware, data breaches, and social engineering techniques. The aim was to strengthen learners’ knowledge and skills so that they can identify and respond to digital risks, while simultaneously fostering responsible behaviors and everyday practices of digital protection.
The course was structured into four microlearning units, following the microlearning approach to ensure flexibility and immediate applicability. Its thematic areas included recognizing suspicious messages, safe use of devices, protection of personal data, and the creation of a personal security plan. Implementation involved the use of multimedia content and interactive tools (H5P, Google Forms, Padlet, Mentimeter), combined with collaborative learning forums. The evaluation of the learning experience was carried out through diverse methods such as quizzes, open-response tasks with rubrics, checklists, self-assessment activities, and a final examination.
The thesis concludes with recommendations for enriching the course with new topics and technologies, while at the same time offering a replicable educational model for adult training in digital protection.
