This postgraduate thesis was written as part of my studies in the Master’s Program in «E-Learning» at the Department of Digital Systems, University of Piraeus. The title of the thesis is «Design, Development and Evaluation of a Digital Course: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and the development of creative skills for sixth-grade primary school students».
The choice of the topic was motivated by the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence and its increasing presence in everyday life in recent years, highlighting the need for acquiring relevant knowledge and developing skills from an early age. Furthermore, the absence of integrating Artificial Intelligence as a subject in primary education constituted a decisive factor in the selection of the topic for the present thesis.
This study focuses on the design and development of an asynchronous self-contained digital course for extracurricular activities aimed at sixth-grade primary school students, with the aim of introducing them to fundamental concepts of Artificial Intelligence, fostering a deep understanding of its safe use, and promoting the development of creative skills. The course was developed on the Google Classroom platform and includes interactive study materials and activities that enhance both students’ critical thinking and creativity.
The structure of the digital course consists of an introduction, four micro-lessons and a final assessment, all presented in a playful manner to maintain students’ interest and encourage participation. The course follows the design principles of microlearning, and within the individual micro-lessons, the achievement of two learning outcomes is developed and assessed. All of this, combined with the features of being a free course and having a Greek-language interface, makes the course an accessible educational tool for introducing students to the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence.
