The maritime industry faces unique safety challenges due to complex operations, hazardous
environments, and high levels of human involvement. This thesis explores the connection between psychological safety, safety leadership, and safety management in maritime industry. The findings of the study indicate that these three factors are
not separate but are related in a way that psychological safety facilitates communication, incident
reporting, and collective learning; a supportive, transformational leadership gives rise to a culture
of trust; the Safety Management System (SMS) and the International Safety Management (ISM)
Code depict the institutional framework and effectiveness and that these are still largely dependent
on human factor.
