This paper examines Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology, highlighting its role as a key enabler for the development of intelligent, sustainable and resilient next-generation wireless networks (6G and beyond). It analyzes both the theoretical foundation and practical applications of ISAC, covering the fusion of sensing and communication functions, the levels of integration, the technological challenges at the hardware, signal processing and receiver design levels, as well as the design strategies for dual functionality. Particular emphasis is given to the contribution of the technology to more efficient use of resources, improve the functionality of modern networks and enhance the sustainability. It also focuses on the broader implications of the integration of ISAC in critical application areas, while outlining future perspectives and technological developments that are expected to define its role in the networks of the future.
