The global shipping industry faces a broad spectrum of risks, ranging from operational and financial challenges to environmental and geopolitical uncertainties. Effective risk management is essential for ensuring the resilience and sustainability of shipping operations. This paper explores various strategies and approaches to risk management, focusing on the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, the formation of partnerships and alliances, and the adoption of innovative technologies. Through specific case studies, including Maersk’s cybersecurity response and Shell’s environmental management of LNG shipping, this analysis highlights how different companies and countries implement strategies to mitigate risks. A comparison of strategies between major global shipping companies like Maersk and COSCO, and between countries such as Japan, Greece, the United States, and Singapore, demonstrates how regulatory environments, technological innovations, and national priorities shape risk management practices. The paper underscores the importance of proactive planning, digitalization, and sustainability in enhancing operational resilience in the shipping industry, offering insights into how companies can adapt to the evolving complexities of the global maritime landscape.
