This thesis investigates the relationship between the minimum wage and employment in
Greece. Its objective is to examine, using data for the period 1998–2022, whether
employment is correlated with the minimum wage and what the nature of that relationship
is. The study combines both theoretical exploration and empirical analysis.
Initially, key concepts related to the minimum wage are presented, along with the main
theoretical frameworks. The analysis then reviews comparative international experiences
concerning the implementation of the minimum wage and its effects on employment in
various countries. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the case of Greece, highlighting recent
developments in the minimum wage and certain structural characteristics of the Greek
labour market.
The empirical part applies econometric analysis using the Ordinary Least Squares
(OLS) method to estimate the effect of the minimum wage on employment. The results
indicate a statistically significant and positive relationship between employment and three
independent variables: the minimum wage, the logarithm of gross investments, and public
expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP. Based on these findings, the study
proposes a set of policy measures aimed at strengthening employment.
