This study examines the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices on employee
attitudes in the Greek labor market, focusing on the shift of ESG from a tool for external promotion to a
strategy for internal organizational development. Despite the growing adoption of ESG principles, their
influence on employment choices and employee perceptions remains under exploration, especially in
Greece.
This research aims to capture how ESG practices affect employees’ intention to stay with or choose an
employer, and how factors such as gender, age, and employment sector shape these attitudes. The analysis
is based on a structured questionnaire completed by 140 employees and processed through linear (OLS)
and binary (Probit) econometric models.
Findings show that familiarity with social and governance-related ESG practices enhances employees’
positive attitudes, while employment in the production sector and male gender are associated with lower
acceptance of the social aspect of ESG. Younger employees and those in production also exhibit a reduced
intention to choose an employer based on governance practices.
The empirical analysis highlights that ESG strategies are not merely tools for external communication but
are closely linked to employees’ intentions to remain with or select an employer. In particular, governance
and social practices emerge as key reference points for a significant share of employees, indicating a shift
in focus from traditional financial incentives to more substantive institutional values.
