Since the creation of the first human societies, the need for energy has been clear in
order for people to carry out their various processes. Thus, over the years, various
sources of energy from nature began to be discovered. In the modern world, with the
rapid expansion of the world population and the geometric increase in its needs, energy
consumption, respectively, has increased vertically. The massive consumption of
resources for energy production, however, has been accompanied by adverse
environmental developments that have become particularly evident in the current
century. Therefore, interest in recent decades has focused on identifying new,
renewable energy sources that can meet energy demand, but also ensure environmental
protection. Biomass is a form of renewable energy source that has been increasingly
exploited in recent years. The purpose of this thesis was to highlight the role of biomass
for energy production. The topic was approached through the method of systematic
literature review, in which 12 studies from the previous decade were analyzed. As it
turned out, biomass can support the production of various forms of energy, such as
thermal and electrical, while it also occupies a significant share in modern fuel
production.
