This thesis explores the implementation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology in the healthcare sector, with a particular focus on the pharmaceutical supply chain and Greek pharmaceutical warehouses. The primary objective is to capture the perceptions of industry professionals regarding the benefits, limitations, and prerequisites for adopting this technology as a means of enhancing traceability and operational efficiency. The theoretical framework draws on concepts such as quality management, transaction cost theory, institutional compliance theory, and business intelligence, highlighting the strategic role of traceability in promoting transparency and performance within health systems.
The empirical analysis is based on data collected through a structured questionnaire addressed to pharmaceutical warehouse professionals. The responses reveal a generally positive stance toward RFID technology, emphasizing its potential to improve batch tracking accuracy, enable real-time monitoring, reduce human error during product handling, and support regulatory compliance. However, concerns were also raised regarding the high initial investment costs, the need for specialized staff training, and interoperability with existing IT systems. RFID is not seen as a replacement for existing systems (such as barcodes) but rather as a complementary tool contributing to a hybrid, more flexible traceability model.
The findings support the theoretical position that technological innovation requires institutional support and organizational readiness to be effectively implemented. The study concludes by proposing the development of a national strategy for traceability in the pharmaceutical sector, positioning RFID as a core component of digital transformation in healthcare logistics.
