This thesis examines the evolution of American policies and strategies during the Obama
and the first Trump Administrations, focusing on the geopolitical landscape of the Eastern
Mediterranean. Drawing upon historical facts, it informs a database for the region and
seeks to identify these policies, their deviations and similarities. The influence of the
United States for the period under examination has been significant all over the Eastern
Mediterranean, but the relation has been reciprocal; the policies of the two
Administrations have evolved because of the events they had to face and the constant
flux of the geopolitical conditions of the region.
Despite differing styles, political backgrounds and personal idiosyncrasies, the study
comes to the conclusion that the strategy of the two Administrations in the Eastern
Mediterranean has been similar, founded on established American doctrines and
pursuing the interests of the U.S. and their allies in the region. The main goals of the
U.S. have remained the continuation of counter terrorism policies, the reduction of
influence from Russia, China and Iran in the region, the support of their allies and the
pursuit of regional stability and peace. Any differences can usually be tracked down to
the means used to achieve such goals.
Finally, this thesis concludes that the formation of strong bonds between Greece and the
U.S. is a strategy beneficial for both countries. Athens and Washington have vested
interests in the stability and security of the Eastern Mediterranean, the security and
autonomy of Europe regarding energy and the formation of a common, robust defensive
front against any malevolent actors. In order to achieve these goals, Greece and the U.S.
must coordinate and cooperate in the diplomatic field, support each other in matters of
economy and energy and lastly, work towards a better integration and cooperation
between their militaries.
