This thesis explores how ESG (Environmental and Social Governance) criteria, namely
environmental care, social responsibility, and solid corporate governance—can influence the
decision-making process of foreign investors. The central research question investigates to what
extent the adoption of ESG policies by countries and businesses can positively affect both the
flow and quality of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), thereby contributing to sustainable
development. In a rapidly changing world where sustainability risks and social challenges are
intensifying, the study examines whether investment decisions are increasingly influenced not
only by financial metrics but also by a country’s or a company’s commitment to responsibility
and transparency. By examining the concept of FDI and its significant impact on host countries,
this work aims to assess how sustainable practices can help attract more stable and high-quality
investments.
The specific objectives of the study include a detailed presentation of the theoretical foundations
of ESG criteria and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), an analysis of the motivations behind
FDI and their effects on host countries, an investigation of regulatory frameworks that support
sustainable investment activity, and an overview of the difficulties and challenges associated with
the implementation of ESG policies on a global scale. Special attention is given to recent shifts in
the global economic landscape and the ways in which countries can enhance their investment
attractiveness through greater transparency, social cohesion, and environmental accountability.
The study also presents real-world examples of ESG policy implementation in both the European
Union and emerging economies such as China. The thesis concludes that ESG is no longer a trend
or optional feature, but rather a fundamental indicator of credibility and competitiveness,
especially for nations seeking to strengthen their position in the global investment arena.
