Childhood overweight and obesity represent a critical public health issue in the 21st century, with escalating prevalence rates posing significant health, psychological, and socioeconomic challenges. Recent data from the WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI, 2022) highlight Greece as having the highest rates of overweight and obese children and adolescents (aged 2–14) in Europe, particularly among those aged 5–7 years.
This study estimates citizens’ Willingness to Pay (WTP) for policies targeting a 50% reduction in childhood overweight and obesity, employing the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). Results reveal an average annual WTP of €71.73 (95% CI: €69.43–€74.03), corresponding to an aggregate societal WTP of approximately €480 million—far exceeding current public expenditures and estimated negative externality costs.
The findings underscore strong public support for intervention programs, even if linked to increased taxation, and provide policymakers with evidence-based insights for designing cost-effective strategies.
