This paper examines the importance and prospects of sustainability in the healthcare sector through a comprehensive, multidimensional approach. It focuses on the three main pillars of sustainability—environmental, social, and economic—and how they are integrated into the healthcare system.
The theoretical framework of the concept of sustainability and sustainable development is presented, along with their historical evolution and the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Subsequently, the healthcare system is analyzed (primary, secondary, tertiary care, and public health), emphasizing the importance of equitable access, prevention, technology, and research for a sustainable health system.
Special reference is made to environmental sustainability through measures such as:
● energy efficiency,
● medical waste management,
● green buildings,
● telemedicine.
The social dimension focuses on equity, staff well-being, and health education, while the economic aspect centers on cost reduction through prevention and innovation.
Examples such as the Greener NHS and the organization Healthcare Without Harm demonstrate practical ways of integrating sustainability into healthcare services. In addition, challenges such as high costs, lack of knowledge, and resistance to change are described.
The text refers to Iatriko Athinon (Athens Medical Group) and the Hellenic Healthcare Group as two case studies. It is noteworthy that both organizations have made significant strides in governance, environmental action, and social contribution. Lastly, the bibliography used in our work is mentioned.
