The purpose of this thesis is to examine the European Union's contribution to research funding in Higher Education and to the dissemination of its outcomes. This study is bibliographic in nature and is based on the analysis and critical synthesis of recent scientific articles, as well as on the citation and graphical presentation of statistical data. Among the most significant findings of this thesis are the crucial roles of research and development, innovation, and knowledge dissemination. More specifically, the study confirms that research and development contribute substantially to a country’s economic growth and innovation potential, serving as key drivers of national prosperity. Additionally, spatial factors—such as geographic location and proximity—emerge as essential for effectively leveraging knowledge diffusion processes.
Furthermore, the research highlights that the establishment of a unified European Research Area plays an important role in promoting the diffusion of knowledge, research, and innovation across member states. The analysis also reveals a notable upward trend in the volume and impact of Greek academic publications in international journals. However, this progress contrasts with the limited public expenditure on Higher Education in Greece up to 2016. In contrast, EU-level funding for Higher Education has been shown to be particularly significant.
All of the above contributed to the development of an objective and comprehensive understanding of the topic under investigation. Nevertheless, considering that universities are the cornerstone of academic research and that university researchers are the most directly involved with the issues examined in this thesis, it is essential that future studies focus on the perspectives of researchers at Greek Universities and Research Centers.
