This thesis investigates the concept of seafarers’ well-being, focusing on the physical, psychological, and social factors that shape the quality of life at sea. Seafarers operate under demanding conditions , long periods away from home, limited access to healthcare and social support, and intense workloads making their well-being a critical issue for both personal health and operational safety in the maritime industry. The study builds on two key theoretical frameworks: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Diener et al.’s Subjective Well-Being (SWB) theory. These models help assess both objective well-being (e.g., income, living conditions, medical access) and subjective well-being ( life satisfaction, emotional balance) in the seafaring profession.
Particular attention is given to:
• Working conditions (hours, rest, contracts),
• Mental and physical health (stress, isolation, diet),
• Legal protection, through international regulations like the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), SOLAS, and STCW.
In addition, the thesis presents case studies from leading maritime companies such as Maersk , and highlights modern initiatives like Diversity@Sea, which aim to create safer, more inclusive onboard environments.
The research concludes with a set of policy recommendations and strategic proposals to enhance the well-being of seafarers promoting not only their health and rights but also the sustainability and competitiveness of the maritime sector.
