The purpose of this diploma thesis is to examine the financial performance of shipping companies focusing on dry bulk and tanker sectors. For this analysis, the “three biggest players” from each market are examined in order to facilitate the benchmarking analysis. To evaluate their financial performance, Key Performance Indicators were used focusing on operational activities. Based on those KPIs, relevant benchmarks were created for each sector and a comparative analysis between those two followed.
The shipping industry has always been characterized by great risk and uncertainty. During the past decades, several external factors- such as Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical disputes, etc.- have affected the freight markets and, as a result, also the financial performance of shipping companies. For this reason, the fuzzy methods were considered as more suitable in order to deal with this vagueness. More specifically, the non-asymptotic fuzzy estimators’ method has been applied in several operation-related financial indicators and ratios of each sector’s leader during a specific time frame.
The findings from this analysis can be utilized by either those companies, their competitors, potential investors or other stakeholders and even future market entrants to evaluate the risk and financial yield from such investment.
