This thesis examines the role and function of the Greek Notary Public (marine inspectors) in the context of international regulations on maritime safety and the environment. It explores the historical development, operational processes and challenges faced by these professionals in ensuring the safety, legality and efficiency of maritime operations. Through comprehensive analysis, the study explores the institutional framework governing marine inspectors, focusing on assessment criteria, historical overview, roles and responsibilities, and the impact of international conventions such as SOLAS, MARPOL and the ISM Code on their practices. Additionally, the paper assesses technological developments affecting marine surveying and assesses public perception and trust in the Surveyor. It also provides a comparative analysis with major international inspectors to highlight areas of improvement and potential strategic improvements. The research aims to offer practical ideas that can advance the practices of the Hellenic Surveyor, contributing to the wider goals of maritime safety and environmental protection.
