The research examines the crew market and seafarers' availability in recent decades, focusing on methods to address onboard seafarers' difficulties and facilitate their joining procedures and education onshore. The methodology involves qualitative research through interviews with crew manning agencies from ex-USSR countries and Greece, examining factors influencing seafarers' decisions and addressing the shortage of seafarers. The literature review discusses the impact of pandemics, poor retention and rotation planning, geopolitical events, training requirements, cultural diversity in shipping, and gender equality issues in the maritime industry. The crew market is currently facing a shortage of over 25,000 qualified officers, with increasing demand for seafarers in the upcoming years is a typical example. Attention is given to the factors contributing to the shortage including working conditions, strict maritime laws, unsettled social life, reduced crew onboard, non-competitive salaries, offers from Asian crew markers, political paperwork, and force majeure. The study also highlights the importance of gender equality in the maritime industry, with efforts to create more inclusive work environments for female seafarers. Last but not least some conclusions and suggestions are given in the last part of this paper in order to understand the main questions of this paper.
