In this paper, an attempt is made to identify and review the fuels that can be alternative options to conventional fossil fuels in the shipping sector. In addition to the list, the safety issues arising from the use of these fuels are highlighted, and in particular ammonia, which we have identified as an alternative fuel with great prospects but also with great challenges. These challenges include the revision of safety regulations so that the use of ammonia becomes acceptable as a fuel.
An analysis is made of the study method according to the IMO methodology, regarding the hazard identification and risk management for the use of ammonia. The IMO “Formal Safety Assessment” served as a guide for the study and preparation of the paper, where the available data allowed it.
Finally, the institutional and regulatory framework is recorded and to what extent this regulates the safety issues identified.
