Geopolitical crises, as well as significant changes in oil prices, are two significant
factors that can have a decisive influence on tanker freight market. Geopolitical
fluctuations such as 9/11, the existence of ISIS and Houthi, the war Russia-Ukraine, the
conflicts in the Middle East (Gaza Strip, Yemen, Lebanon) and even the geopolitical
risks associated with the emergence of the BRICS, the United States presidential
elections and the election of Donald Trump are creating new conditions in global trade
and shipping. This thesis will investigate the impact of geopolitical risks and oil price
shocks on tankers freight rates from January 2010 until February 2025, using Vector
Autoregressive (VAR) models. The contribution of this thesis to the literature is
significant as it will shed light on the relationship between geopolitical and economic
crises and fluctuations in shipping and in particular in tanker freight rates. The findings
of this study reveal a differentiated response of tanker freight rates to changes in WTI
spot oil prices and geopolitical crises. Specifically, oil price shocks appear to have a
stronger impact on the freight rates of large crude oil tankers, while geopolitical risks
exert a more significant influence on the freight rates of smaller product tankers. The
study of freight rate determination maintains an influential role both in research and in
the implementation of effective shipping-related strategies.
