The shipping industry contributes about 2.5% of global CO2 gas emissions annually. The
International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target of reducing the total annual
emissions from international shipping to 70% by 2050. For this reason, carbon capture, use
and storage technology are emerging as the main alternative solution to reduce CO2
emissions from ships. However, there are many challenges associated with carbon capture
and storage on marine vessels, such as the space taken up on a vessel and the cost of a carbon
capture system. This paper explores the various carbon capture technologies with their
advantages and limitations. In addition, it emphasizes the possibility of transport and longterm storage of the captured carbon.
