Maritime communication systems are a crucial pillar in the modern maritime industry, ensuring the efficient transmission of critical information within and among ships, port facilities and control centers. The continuous evolution of technology in satellite coverage, radio communications, identification and tracking systems (AIS, LRIT) and distress and safety communication systems (GMDSS) is bringing out new research trends focusing on the safety, efficiency and sustainability of navigation.
This paper attempts to map the latest developments surrounding maritime communication systems by highlighting trends in international research literature through a quantitative analysis of scientific articles from the Scopus database. Initially, a brief overview of traditional and more recent maritime communication systems is presented with a focus on technological innovations and regulatory requirements. Then, the search methodology used, the selection criteria of the studies and the way of data processing are described.
The analysis results shed light on the evolution of research interest, its institutional and geographical origins, and the thematic areas with the greatest impact, such as cybersecurity on ships, the integration of automatic navigation systems, smart IoT solutions in maritime transport and satellite communications. Finally, gaps and challenges are highlighted, along with suggestions for future research that will enhance the understanding of research trends in maritime communications and maritime security at the international level.
