This Master's Thesis explores game-based learning in Museums and Cultural Institutions.
More and more of the traditional museums include educational programs in their liturgical
system in a n effort to become more accessible to the public and to eliminate the strict
character that they had until now. At the same time, trying to meet the challenges of the new
digital age, they are adopting new technologies and the internet in their operation. Game
based learning is one of the solutions to mitigate this inevitable transition to the digital age and
to support active learning in the educational process. At the same time it is gaining more
interest from the cultural heritage scientific community as one of the purposes it serves is to
promote it, raise awareness of its importance and encourage users to visit more often cultural
institutions, such as museums. Now the tangible cultural heritage is more represented in the
virtual worlds of museums through applications of 3D technology ,while the intangible cultural
heritage gets more visibility through game-based learning as it aims to its preservation. This
paper attempts to address the advantages and disadvantages of game-based learning in
general and to consider the options for using serious games in the museum environment.
