Climate change, air pollution, and socioeconomic consequences make it necessary to find more environmentally friendly solutions in all areas of human activity. These efforts include the utilization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel in the maritime industry. Coastal shipping, in general, lags behind ocean-going shipping in terms of green investments. This disertation records the methods of extraction, production, purchase, and transportation of LNG as a fuel, comparing it with other technologies and fuels that reduce emissions. After presenting the usage regulations from various organizations and evaluating its use, we focus on the method of its utilization in Greece. In conclusion, LNG emerges as an ideal transitional fuel for shipping. The main concern for its utilization is the necessary modifications to the existing ships and the limited refueling stations.
