The position of women in all historical periods and in all eras has been questioned, degraded and considered subordinate to men. A perception that also prevailed in the workplace, where gender relations were so intense, putting women on the social fringes, in an invisible economic sphere, while reinforcing the image of the male carrier and pillar of the family. However, in recent years, women in the labor market are renegotiating their predetermined role, actively entering production and developing female entrepreneurship, even in sectors that were considered predominantly male, such as shipping.
Thus, the woman works, supports the family budget and strengthens her position in society. At the same time, she becomes independent, develops her skills and in general the female entrepreneurial spirit. All these, however, are not necessary elements that will eliminate years of stereotypes and prejudices about the position of women at work, specifically in shipping, with inequalities still remaining today to a strong degree, with lower salaries and lower hierarchical positions, against men, thus strengthening her economic vulnerability and her under-representation in this area. A gap that exists in the payroll, in the career and ends up through their social contributions, is also reflected in their pension.
The International Maritime Organization created its own strategic plan for the integration of women into the maritime space in 1988. In addition, it put into effect the Women's Development Program in 1989, emphasizing equal opportunities in access to maritime education through gender-specific programs (IMO, 1988, 1992).
