This thesis explores the sustainable blue economy in coastal ecosystems of multiple anthropogenic uses, such as industry, tourism, urban development and protected natural environment. The aim of the research is to develop two tools for the assessment of the sustainable blue economy. The first tool, the IES (Indicators Ecosystem Services) protocol, was designed to assess the degree of achievement of the blue economy through indicators and analysis of ecosystem services, while the second tool, the Holistic Blue Economy Approach (HBEA), aims to identify and prioritize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that most affect the achievement of the sustainable blue economy. Both tools were applied in the Gulf of Eleusis, an area with intense industrial activity, historical and cultural significance, as well as environmental challenges, to assess their effectiveness. The conclusions underline that strategies for the sustainable development and conservation of coastal ecosystems require actors to work together to implement targeted and effective actions that balance economic, social and environmental needs.
