Marine protection and sustainable management of fisheries resources are key issues for biodiversity conservation, climate stability and the well-being of coastal communities. The seas, which cover most of the planet, are facing increasing threats from overfishing, habitat degradation and illegal exploitation, making it necessary to adopt integrated protection strategies. The synergy of international agreements, legislation and innovative practices is proving vital to maintain the balance between environmental management and socio-economic development.
In this context, international agreements, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity in Waters Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), and the targets of the UN 2030 Agenda, with emphasis on Goal 14, are analyzed in detail. The European Union's action, through the Common Fisheries Policy and the European Green Agreement, are presented as institutional tools for the protection and management of the marine environment. It also examines the state of fisheries in the Mediterranean and Greece, as well as the challenges related to aquaculture, habitat destruction and fishing gear waste.
Special emphasis is given to the concept of the blue economy and the role of sustainable tourism, which combines environmental sustainability with economic prosperity. Solutions based on innovative practices and technologies are highlighted, such as the circular economy and the strengthening of cooperation between local communities and states. The synthesis of these elements lays the foundations for a future where the seas are protected and exploited in a way that ensures the well-being of both ecosystems and the people who depend on them.
