Many studies indicate that dietary habits are strongly linked to specific diseases,
such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, etc. The aim of this study was a) to
examine variations in dietary habits among Europeans aged 50+ across different
regions of Europe and b) to investigate the impact of these dietary habits on chronic
diseases, heart attack diagnosis, cholesterol, blood pressure, and cancer. The empirical
data used in the analysis were drawn from the 9th wave (2022) of the Survey of Health,
Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).
The logistic models applied revealed a significant impact of diet on chronic
diseases. Specifically, reduced consumption of dairy products decreases the relative
likelihood of chronic diseases as well as that of diabetes. The consumption of legumes,
beans, and eggs is a protective factor across all models examined. Reducing the intake
of meat, fish, and poultry lowers the likelihood of cholesterol and hypertension but
increases the risk of cancer. Fruits and vegetables help prevent chronic diseases in
general.
