The development of three-dimensional digital representations of historical and geographical areas has seen significant progress in recent years, leveraging technologies such as 3D modeling, graphics engines, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Within this context, this thesis focuses on creating a realistic digital representation of the island of Hydra using the Unity engine and the Blender 3D modeling tool.
Hydra is a unique cultural and historical destination, renowned for preserving its traditional architecture and for banning motor vehicles, relying instead on boats and traditional means of transportation. This project aims to accurately capture the island's topography, maritime heritage, and architectural elements.
The approach followed is based on the use of custom 3D models, UV mapping techniques, and PBR texturing, ensuring a high level of realism in both aesthetics and geographical representation. Additionally, the project supports interactive exploration through a First Person Controller, allowing users to navigate virtually through the environment.
The contribution of this work is multifaceted, as it can be utilized for educational purposes, tourism promotion, and cultural heritage preservation. The results demonstrate that the creation of a detailed and accurate 3D representation can enhance the understanding, promotion, and protection of historical sites. Moreover, it lays the groundwork for further expansions, such as the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies.
