The aim of this paper is to study the existence of empty container flows in total transport chain and also the causes of its generation and the consequences that these have on total transportation cost. The environment in which the liner shipping company is activated and the restrictions it faces on institutional and technical level on its course to achieve its main goal are also developed. The main attributes of liner shipping are being described to the extend that these specify the general framework under which a typical liner shipping company takes its operational decisions on empty container repositioning . The opportunities to optimize the flows of empty containers on all stages of the transportation chain are studied and the current practices to achieve this target on the maritime section are being presented. The goal is to specialize the empty container flows problem on a link between terminals level in order to identify the specific points for intervention on the transportation chain to reduce this part of transportation cost which is linked to the empty containers flows to transportation network .Most common practices to reduce transportation are presented from which the capacity interchange between carriers is selected as a case study.
