The present dissertation focuses on the management of hazardous healthcare waste (HHW) and aims to analyze existing practices and challenges related to its treatment and disposal, while also proposing a sustainable and holistic management model. Initially, the relevant legislative framework at both the European and Greek levels is presented, outlining the guidelines and regulations governing waste management. This is followed by a detailed examination of HHW management and treatment processes both within and outside healthcare facilities, with particular emphasis on modern alternative treatment methods and risk analysis. The dissertation proposes the establishment of a standardized, independent waste management unit with specific legislative regulations and objectives to ensure the system’s sustainability and safety. This section provides a comprehensive evaluation of the prerequisites for implementing these proposals, including the necessary incentives and control mechanisms. Finally, recommendations for sustainable development are presented, along with an analysis of the economic and environmental benefits of implementing these approaches. The conclusions emphasize the importance of holistic HHW management in safeguarding public health and protecting the environment.
