Bradley TerryAbstract
The Bradley-Terry model is a well-known probabilistic model among others. It boasts several notable applications in Statistics and specifically in the field of comparisons analysis. While studied by Zermelo in the 1920s, it was presented R.A Bradley and M.E Terry in 1952. Since then, its importance in a series of applications has been well acknowledged.
The underlying idea is based on the practice of pairwise comparisons between entities of the same kind. By the term “entity”, from this point on, competing individuals, teams or compared objects may be implied, depending on the respective scenario under consideration.
In the field of research, pairwise comparisons data is often available through the recorded preferences expressed by the individuals participating in the study. Each individual is urged to opt for the choice that seems optimal or simply more favorable among a provided pair, based on their specific preference and personal judgment. Depending on the case study, data may become available through a range of sources. For example, in the field of sports similar data may also become available through the recorded outcomes of past face-offs between individual athletes or sports teams.
Regardless of the specific context, however, the focus remains on the utilization of the available data in order to for the estimation of the skill parameters, associated with each entity, to be proceeded with. The skill parameters represent their respective level of capacity or popularity.
The Bradley-Terry model provides the relative probability of prevalence of one entity among over another, as function of their specific skill parameters. Moreover, through the same model, a complete ranking of the participating entities may be achieved. This ranking presents the respective entities according to an established order from strongest to weakest.
In the research field, the utilization of the Bradley-Terry model may provide important insight into specific comparison problems. It may also contribute to the identification of the factors influencing the outcome of a comparison and thus to the extraction of relatively accurate predictions.
Although initially developed for the evaluation of individual athletes, the significance of the Bradley-Terry model brought about its extensive application in fields such as product evaluation, website ranking, social network analysis, evaluation of political election results etc.
The purpose of this thesis on “The Bradley-Terry model and its extensions” is
1. To develop the necessary theoretical background and to present the relative model in its basic form highlighting its importance in the analysis of comparative data.
2. To outline the most notable of its extensions, developed in order for its adaptation in wide variety of scenarios to be achieved.
3. To develop and present relevant applications of the models studied.
4. To provide a complete overview and to reach the extraction of useful conclusions.
