Education has always been one of the most important pillars of a state. Recognizing
its catalytic role, the present study investigates the significance of Emotional
Intelligence and the need to integrate it into the Greek educational system.
The relationship between Emotional Intelligence and the educational process, social
development, and Sustainable Development Goals is analyzed, according to the
United Nations 2030 Agenda. The Greek educational policy and the challenges faced
by educators are presented.
This research examines the level of familiarity of Primary and Secondary Education
teachers in Greece have with the concept and dimensions of Emotional Intelligence.
For this purpose, a quantitative study was conducted electronically using a Google
Forms questionnaire.
The findings demonstrate the widespread recognition of the importance of Emotional
Intelligence in the educational process. However, a significant gap is identified
between theoretical knowledge and practical application, as a small portion of the
sample has received relevant training, despite their stated familiarity with the
concept.
It is observed that teachers have higher levels of emotional competence compared to
students, with the latter showing deficiencies, particularly in empathy. An important
finding is the positive attitude of teachers towards the integration of emotional
intelligence into the curriculum and the recognition of the need for specialized
training in this field.
