Abstract

Shipping is one of the most vital and dynamic sectors of the global economy; however, women’s participation remains low despite notable advancements. This study explores the contribution of women to the maritime industry, both at sea and in shore-based companies, examining their role as well as the challenges they face. Emphasis is placed on issues such as gender discrimination, wage inequalities, stereotypes, and the limited representation of women in leadership positions. The research combines a literature review and primary data analysis to explore strategies adopted by maritime companies and international organizations to promote gender equality. Additionally, it examines the role of technology and automation in creating new opportunities for women. The findings highlight the need for inclusive workplace environments that foster women’s participation, drive innovation, and enhance the sustainability of the shipping sector. The study concludes with recommendations aimed at eliminating discrimination and supporting a more equitable professional future.
