The Covid-19 pandemic and it’s consequences have drastically changed the ways we face health crises. The development of effective health policy models was paramount to address this particular crisis. To this end, game theory may provide valuable guidance for decision-making by various governments. Game theoretic comparison of pandemic response models reveal differences a) in the approaches adapted and b) in the consequences of health policies implemented.
During the pandemic, different approaches were adopted by various countries so they could manage more effectively the ongoing crisis. Some countries chose a flexible approach, encouraging social distancing and mask-wearing without strict restrictive measures and lockdowns, such as Sweden. Other countries preferred implementing strict restrictive measures such as lockdowns and travel bans, as seen in Greece. The comparison of these approaches can reveal the advantages and limitations of different strategies and offer significant lessons that can be used to be better prepared for future crises.
Applying game theory to analyze these approaches can uncover the various factors influencing both the decisions of the governments and the reaction of the public. These factors include public expectations, the economic consequences of measures taken, public trust in governments, and the alternative options available. By understanding these factors better, we can evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of different models.
Moreover, the results drawn from the comparison of pandemic response models across different countries can be used for better preparation and more effective management of health crises. Based on the lessons drawn from the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic, we can develop improved health policies and practices to effectively address future pandemics and protect global public health. Thus, the comparison of response models to the pandemic serves as a critical tool for the promotion of public health and the enhancement of global resilience to health threats.
